CRETE VALLEY launches Renewable Energy Week

April 18th, 2025

The event will take place in Crete from May 12 to 16 as part of the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) to spotlight renewable energy innovation and citizen engagement.

From May 12 to 16, 2025, the Region of Crete and Zentrum für Soziale Innovation, together with partners from the European project CRETE VALLEY, will host the Renewable Energy Week in Heraklion, Crete.

The event, part of the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) initiative, will showcase renewable energy solutions being developed for Crete and beyond while facilitating discussions on key topics such as energy justice, diversity, and sustainability. By bringing together policymakers, energy experts, businesses, citizens, students, and NGOs, the initiative will examine different aspects of the renewable energy transition.

The Renewable Energy Week will start on Monday, May 12, with a session in Heraklion on the project's achievements in transforming Crete into a Renewable Energy Valley. On the Tuesday, technical partners will introduce high school and university students to the technologies used in the pilot areas. At the same time, grassroots organisations and citizens from the pilot areas will work with lead partners to co-design energy solutions, focusing on inclusivity and local needs. On the Wednesday workshop for local entrepreneurs will explore how businesses can adopt and benefit from renewable energy technologies.

Throughout the week, citizens in Crete will be able to walk around the exhibition, designed to present solutions to alternative forms of energy in a comprehensive way and to try the VR experience designed for the CRETE VALLEY project.

These activities are part of the European Commission's Sustainable Energy Days, a global series of events promoting clean energy, energy efficiency, and public awareness.

About CRETE VALLEY

Co-funded by the European Union, CRETE VALLEY aims to create a Renewable Energy Valley 'Living Lab' (REV-Lab) in Crete. It is envisioned as a decentralized renewable energy system that combines leading-edge ICT technologies, open digital solutions, social innovation processes, and sound business models that are easy to adopt. CRETE VALLEY will demonstrate a digitalised, distributed, renewable, low carbon landscape that is affordable for all and fully covers the local energy needs on an annual basis, utilizing multiple renewable energy carriers and leveraging energy storage technologies. The project is coordinated by the Institute of Communication & Computer Systems of the National Technical University of Athens (ICCS) and brings together 41 partners from across Europe.
